SIMPLE GUIDES FOR INSTRUCTORS
These six instructor guides in English and Spanish accompany our patient educational guides and are geared for leading a diabetes education group but are also useful for one-on-one teaching. The instructor guides start with basics of type 1 diabetes care (also useful for people with type 2 diabetes who use insulin). We created two instructor guides on learning about food choices. There is one on nutrition basics outlining the different food groups of carbohydrates, fats and protein followed by a guide on carb counting. There are also guides on insulin self-adjustment and how to manage diabetes on sick days and during exercise. All skills are essential to successful diabetes management and the basic lessons are great for first time learners as well as for those who need a refresher course!
Often the newer diabetes technologies of insulin pens or pumps are unfamiliar to patients. The educational sessions on insulin pens and pumps help address many of the initial questions relate to the basics of how the devices work and could fit into their lifestyle. The basic question of “Is this technology right for me?” are also issues that the company's product guides don't address. The educational sessions are designed to have patients practice different diabetes care skills, learn the basics of insulin pens and pumps and learn how to refer back to the patient guides when necessary.
The PDF versions are all open-source and freely available. They can either be printed or hosted on a website for distribution to a wider audience.
