Research Lab

The Community Diabetes Initiative (CDI), a research unit within the USC Keck School of Medicine's Department of Endocrinology. The purpose of our unit is to improve the lives of people with obesity, pre-diabetes and diabetes living in the poorest parts of Los Angeles County. The program was established in 2004 through a $2 million planning grant from the WM Keck Foundation.

The objectives of the grant were to:
  1. Work with the local communities to define needs with regards to the prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes.
  2. Seek funding for the proposed areas of need.
  3. Implement and evaluate programs to prove their efficacy.

Funding from private donations, federal grants and charitable organizations have supported CDI efforts to conduct clinical research trials to improve obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease outcomes, increase access to healthy food options, provide nutrition and physical activity education, assist individuals at risk for and with diabetes, and work with community organizations to increase their capacity be part of the solution to reduce obesity and diabetes.
